Yeah i did. You just give them the car make, model and car no: Should be something like ABCD1-ABCD etc. On the black plate under the bonnet.Then off they trundle to find out, and give you the date of manufacture It has the same birthday as Dad. Number is:

Cut of date for tax exempt is 31st Jan 1973.
I had a mini that was listed on the log book as date of registration 10th March 1973.
I contacted the DVLA and they told me if I could prove the car was manufactured before this date.
Which i managed to do through countless phone calls and faxes
Turned out the car was manufactured in Dec 1972
So was worth the hassle
