It can, but you'll need to plug redrill and retap holes, and get pistns machined

you'll see about 100-110hp from the std head and cam, with good torque low down.

110 even from the 8v? thats rather good,

when you say pistons machined is this for the valves? coulndt a decompression plate work to raise the head up so they do not touch the pistons

I think youd need a plate soo thick that the copression would be far too low.

they are going to be a fair thickness of decompression plate! and yes they are for the valves

Weber carbs for the extra effort to fit them to this head, are just not worth it, as bling as they are, thats about all they have going for them. The head comes with fuel injection. A programable ECU will make it so much easier to set up both fueling and ignition, and probibly cost less in outright cost and setting up.

fuel injection is past, present, and future

was thinking a set of webers would be far cheaper but working out the costs of a custom manifold linkages and filters etc it is quite a bit of cash,

megasquirt might be the next direction then,

what is the average cost of this conversion?

You'd need to get very creative with linkages and manifolds to fit a pair of Webers whereas the original BMW intake and throttle-bodies will work just fine with an aftermarket ECU. Chances are the ECU setup will be as cheap as the necessary stuff to fit the Webers.

Cost wise depends on how much of the work you can do yourself. Actual machining work is probably only a couple of hundred quid but there are some custom bits needed and some parts from other vehicles depending on what conversion you do. Most use the Ford Pinto verniers and cambelt tensioner but there are a couple of custom plates to seal the end of the head and parts of a Mini belt drive kit plus I think a custom toothed pulley for the crankshaft (different number of teeth to the one in the Mini belt drive kit).

i have the 8 valve head on a 1420. thought about keeping the fuel injection but cost of dta at time put me off so went down route of webers.

simon at morspeed done all the work and made an inlet which he started to produce, think i supplied him with the blanks. although the spacing of the ports on the head are different to the webers he matched all the flow capacities until they were even.

have just purchased original throttle bodies so will convert eventually but webers sound awesome

as for linkages went with a twin weber kit from aldon automotive

air filter wise will be using a k&n universal filter cost about £100

matt : )
