Right where do i start!!
My mini is running really badly at the moment. I did think that the car was running rich. It has sat outside work all day and it started first time, without choke but doesnt tick over very well. I think because of the cold.
Anyway when i am driving it with the choke fully in it stutters and backfires when i put my foot down. If i pull the choke out it runs alot better. Now i thought that would indicate it running lean?
When i say backfiring i mean that it stutters and pops and backs and then jerks the car forward.
What do you think this could be?
i have just fitted an lcb and rc40. Its a 1275 engine and HIF38 with K&N replacememnt filter by the way.
It was doing this before i fitted it though. i know it needs tuning/rolling road but i am sure it wouldnt be running this badly!!
Could the timing affect this aswell?

Ive had the same problem with another car. Reset the timings, this worked for me - no problems since! ....In that catergory anyway....

choke make it run richer and if its cold it requires more fuel so at the moment your running pehapes on the lean side, use the choke

to get it to run well at all it needs the choke fully out all the way and even then the engine is struggling a bit

ive just bought a mini saturday and it does exactly the same, splutters and pops if you try an give it some. i have to pull the choke out, and then its fine. i think mine needs a rolling road/tune because its had a stg1 fitted.

Search for a recent topic about connecting up heated inlet manifolds.

Ah.... Ok then. :nugget:
(perhaps I should read this more closely......)
Yes it needs tuning and yes it could well be running that badly.

You've probably already done this but have you checked your distributor cap? Its just mine was running with the same symptons as yours, I was pulling my hair out thinking it was timing, and it turned out to be lots of moisture and gunk on the points and in the dizzy.

yeah i changed the leads, sparks, dizzy cap and rotor arm not long ago.
I have eletronic ignition so thankfully dont have to worry about points and gaps etc.
Its just everything else i have to worry about LOL

I would still check the leads again and the dizzy ... I had a strange problem on one of my cars, started up like a scooby, sounded quite nice actualy, then settled down and drove fine. People had said to me check the leads and plugs ... i said no I only changed them a month back... it ended up been one of the leads, it was brand new and the end had fallen off causing a low contact ... doh .. just a thought for you anyway
