Thanks for all the suggestions guys. It sounds like a minor problem rather than a major problem.

I am going to see my mate to get the timing done and tweak the carb a bit. Hopefully it should sort it out

Right then

Toda y we did the timing and it was slightly off so we have now set to what haynes says: 5 deg BTDC.

Then we did a compression tyest and got between 12.5 and 13.5 Bar of pressure between the 4 cylinders. which works out at 180 to 195 PSI.

Which i believe is very good.

Fiddled with the mixture but it still needs more as to get to run nice without it bogging down i have to have the choke fully out. Although when it is warm it does run a bit better.

Do you reckon it is just a case of setting the mixture now? or are there any other problems i might have? Like inlet maifold leak etc.

Cheers

quick update.

I have sorted most of it now but the only problem now is that there is a big flatspot between 2500 and 3000 rpm. which means when i try and pootle along behind traffic in forth the car hates it.

I am gonna put my hif44 on at the weekend and see how it rubs wth that on.

Dunno if there is anything else to try?

FIXED.

Car is now running fine. Replaced the Hif38 with a Hif44 and it is running much better.

I am going to strip and clean the 38 to see if there is anything actually wrong with it though.

The new carb needs a bit of setting up and tweeking but apart from that its all good again.
