I haven't fitted the Maplin kit but I have made my own for a Mk2. This has a single speed motor and is fed with 12v all the time the ignition is on. The motor is turned on by earthing a wire from the motor to a toggle switch. Self parking is achieved by a contact within the wiper gearbox making a local earth until it reaches its parking position. So all I had to do was make the intermittent wiper unit earth the wire going to the toggle switch. This earthing is made momentarily to get the motor moving, after which the self parking contact keeps it going for one whole wipe.

I was going to use this but then Cooperman pointed me to the control unit fitted to the metro or late mpi (I have fitted MPI stalks by the way)

This gives 2 speed, intermittent and the screen wash wipe option.

The unit cost me £3 off ebay. You would need to check it works okay with your stalk option though. (the MPI stalks have an intermittent position)

If you do go this route, I have a wiring diagram you can use.

Another but pricier alternative is the kit supplied by minispares

Good luck

Steve

I have not fitted that kit (which is by Velleman) but I have used other Velleman kits. They make decent projects.

Years ago I fitted such an aftermarket (pre-built) device to a Toyota. The installation was easy and it was a nice addition to the car.

Cooperrodeo brought up an interesting point about adding such kits to early vs late cars. The early Smiths wiper motors (I think all of the ones with rectangular motor housings) worked by completing earth connections for the windings via the dash mounted switch. I believe the later round motors with self-parking used the dash switch to supply power (not earth) to the motor. Whether or not the Velleman kit is suitable for both types of motors would be something you would need to search for on the Velleman web site. I suspect that this kit was designed for use on cars that already have self-parking wipers and therefore it MAY not be suitable for a Mk1.

EDIT:
The link below is the schematic for the kit:
http://www.velleman....mp/K2599DIA.jpg
It is basically a timer chip used to actuate two relays. Velleman can't tell you how to use the relays to power or earth your wiper motor so a bit of experimenting will be in order based on careful reading of your car's wiring diagram specific to the wiper motor.

My 1968 wiper motor has the rectangular body and is self parking.

Good to know. I wasn't sure when BMC added the self parking wipers to the Mini.
