Suddenly there was a clicking from the car, which then developed into a serious sounding knocking that is quite loud and seems to be constant no matter whether the car is being driven straigh, turning etc...

The noise sounds really loud and has sh*t me up a bit as this has made me thing it's really seriuos.

The squeeking that it progressed from was only when the car was in motion and not just sat there revving so don't think it was any belts. i thought originally that it may have been a wheel bearing, but the guy who services it for me says there was no play in any wheels...

Just looking for help - if anybody thinks these symptoms describe anything in particular please let me know! I'm gonna try trundling it home, but don't want to hit any kind of speed with that kinda noise.

I had a look under her when I got to work, but couldn't see anything hanging or anything around the wheels that looks any different.

Any help appreciated!

If you drive faster, does the knocking become more frequent?

If the knocking becomes more frequent as you speed up, I'd say its something to do with driveshafts. Possibly worn splines. If it doesn't seem to be related to the road speed then I think it'll be engine mounts.

Thanx. Engine mount was repaired not too long ago so I sincerely hope it's not that, besides it wasn't nearly as loud as it is now and the mechanic at the time said it was completely worn...

The MOT chap said a few months ago re the squeek it could be wheel bearing or driveshaft.

Driveshaft is a possible then - is this a big job? (expensive)???

Cheers

Have had problems with outer CV joints like this before. (Like JB has said, possibly driveshaft related). Pop it to a garage or mechanic, it could have dried out due to a split boot (the rubber cover) and be damaged.

My upper engine steady used to squeak and as it wore itself out began to bang.... just an idea to check the make sure the bracket hasn't broken off the bulkhead or the engine or anything like that.

Yea, thats why I said it could be engine mounts (including engine steadies in that as well). The squeaking could of been metal squeaky against the rubber/poly (whatever you have) mount as the mount was perishing and allowing the engine to move. And now the knocking is because the engine can move so much there is something (usually carb or manifold) knocking on the bulkhead.

However the comment about a clicking suggests its the driveshaft or cv joints.
