My brake line that goes from the right front junction to the left brake hose has failed two days ago after 37 years. Apart from it being a rather uncool moment, the emergency mechanic and I both couldn't figure out how to undo and/or redo the line to the banjo junction. It's possible to get a spanner there from both the front (clubman front) or from above, but you can then no longer move the spanner in any direction as the clutch bell or the inner wing will prevent that. We ended up just cutting the broken bit off and attaching a new piece via yet another union. This obviously is only a temporary fix that allowed me to get home at least.

So the question to anyone who's done it before: Is it possible to exchange the front, U-shaped brake line from right to left/left to right with the engine in the bay? is a special tool required?

Thanks!

Yes! It is possible - not particularly easy, but certainly possible. Use Kunifer pipe for the replacement.

So from where would you go about undoing the pipe from the union? From above?

I'll give this another bump as we may give it another go this weekend. I guess it might be an idea to use the O-end of a ratchet spanner to do the tightening and then fiddling the spanner off the yet unflanged other end of the line, so I can use a tool that does not require turning of at least one flat, but only one half.

What I always do is to cut pieces out of the front panel to gain access, not forgetting to paint around the newly cut edges to prevent rusting. Do it enough to gain good spanner access.
