Hi All,

My mini cuts out when coming to a stop at junctions, traffic lights etc. Starts up fine and idles fine, then, once driven for 5 mins and it comes to stopping at traffic lights, the car will cut out. It isnt stalling as the car does not jump forward before cutting out. This is both annoying and embarassing as people often think i stall my car constantly!

Any ideas on the problem and advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Hi J960mayfair,

Yes all my lights stay on just the engine cuts out. It re-starts first time everytime once it does cut out but i would obviously try and solve the problem so it doesn't cut out in the first place.

Could it be something to do with the carb maybe? I have a feeling I have heard a simillar problem with someone with the piston sticking.

What about a damp distributor cap? or even something as simple as a low tickover speed, but then you say it holds the revs fine when you restart it.

Distributor cap is fine and dashpot has oil in.... Regarding overfuelling, the mixture was set very rich when i purchased the car around 5 weeks ago. This has been altered but i am still only getting 35-40miles on £8.00 worth of fuel. the engine size is a 998cc. Would i benefit from turning the mixture nut down to make it leaner?

Just checked plugs, they all have a cream-like colour to them which in the Haynes Manual suggests they are in normal condition. This would therefore suggest that the mixture is correctly set. I did overlook the fact that i have a K&N air filter on instead of the bog standard one. Could the problem be related to too much air being let in?

possible, old minis are really picky on air mixture , std filters are only a few quid so would be worth a try.

also have you checked your dashpot oil recently?

have checked dashpot oil within the last few days and the oil level is fine.... regarding the dizzy cap, its a brand new one so i'm hoping it hasn't got any cracks  will check at night though to be on the safe side. I think my best option now is to re-fit the old air filter and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks to everyone who offered their advice and solutions, it is appreciated :)

Will report back once i can get hold of a new air filter and the carburettor elbow as when i brought the car, the K&N filter was on and i believe the elbow has being removed to cater?
