Can you get a 5 speed gear box for a mini 998cc:



I want to have a 5 speed gear box in my mini 998cc are there any actualy made for them i.e on metro's etc or do you know what 5 speed box would go onto it? any help would be amazing!!

Similar thread running nearby - £2000 or so should do it for you. Is it worth it ??

Yeah i just noticed it after stickin this one on!

Still interested to know if the 5 speed out the metro would fit?

Im not sure if there is.. So keep asking people..
But you know that wouldnt be a bad idea apart from it doesnt really need 5.
You can reach alright speeds with the 4

Yeah i know what you mean its only a lil 998cc tho, but i always have that niggle in the back of my head thinking god.. it could just do with that 5th gear lol, when your just crusing along must just be me...

As the gearbox is the same as the 1275's then yes - if you have a couple of thousand pounds to spare :thumbsup:

It's a bit like Spinal Tap's amplifiers, 5 is just a higher number. It's the ratio of the gear you're driving in that really matters and 4th can be just as suitable as 5th with the right final drive. (Minis have lots of final drive ratios to choose from)

Metro's with 5 speed gearboxes have totally different engines and transmissions.

Ahh rite ok lol.. i dont wana spend out too much on this one lol.. easily done tho can loose £5k just being silly buying everything totaly unneeded.. how would i go about sorting out the final drive? biger gear ratio? ... this is what confuzzles me!!!

That spinal tap's thing when right over my head lol.. sorry no idea and okay ill have a look on there ... whats the most i should pay cause im good at being drawn into paying lodes for something i shouldnt!

John also has prices on there. What model is it? Is it pretty much standard? The reason there's plenty of diff ratios is because BL/Rover put some thought into fitting the right one for each specific model in the first place. That said, ideas about acceptable noise levels & economy changed over the years.

Ahh ok brill.. and its an austin mini 30 998cc, 1989 standard no mods nowt just i know 998's from old and there noisey in top gear when on a long joruney reving like hell which means more jungle juice shall be drunk!!
