Model: Mini 1.3L SPI Automatic (Japanese Spec)
Year:96?
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):
I can't seem to keep the oil filter canister tight, it loosens up about every 50 miles or so and starts spewing oil like the Valdez. I've actually gone to the trouble of drilling the bolt head and safety wiring it but it hasn't helped as I always seems to be able to tighten it a little more after its been run or it gets to the point where I'm afraid of stripping the bolt and the seal is mangled. I've swaped out four seals now, always making sure all of the old seal is removed, but all witth the same results. Are there modern spin-on alternatives to the old paper filter & canister, or maybe a remote setup, or replacement canister?...
Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem?
Bone stock...

A 96 car with a canister filter?
Didn't even think they did that. My 1982 Mini had a spin on. Then again if its a JP spec then space might be an issue with the other parts on the JP spec ones.
Sling up a pic of the front of the engine.

All autos use a canister filter.

Have you changed the o-ring seal at the nut end of the canister, this might help? If I remember correctly the nut should only be torqued up to 12-16 lb/ft. If everything else is OK I think you may need to try a new bolt and/or canister.

Hmmm, well now I know. Seems silly mind.

Changed my mates one after he did it up super tight and spilled out on his driveway after a day or so??? I did it hand tight (with a little bit more) and was fine since, I don't think they are meant to be too tight
Not sure on a remote housing or a more modern housing like the manuals but have a looksy on this forum Auto Forum it was started up by another member on here

Thank you all for the info! I have changed the o-ring but it's definately leaking on the other end. It's quite possible I'm overtighening it and making it worse so I think I'll try again as suggested with less torque , if not I guess I'll try to source a new canister. Thanks again for the replys!....

Well, replacing the seals (again) and tightening less didn't work either.
Looks like I may need to replace the canister but I don't see any places that carry them. I don't think the MiniSpares kit will work on the automatics? I did see a post (somewhere) that mentioned that a Japanese company once made an adapter for the automatics. Anyone here ever seen one, or is that just a myth? If so, maybe it looks something like this?

I don't think that you can get new canisters any more. You might find some new old stock about. MRA Minis may have some good used ones for sale - give them a call 0845 672 6464. You could also try putting a wanted ad on here, someone may have one lying around. Occasionally you find them on eBay.
I've never come across a conversion kit, although I have seen one fitted to an automatic 1100 (same engine) - see here: http://autominiregis...e...&thread=857

Thanks, I sent an email to MRA, hopefuly they have some spares for sale. This seems to be a common problem so it's kind of surprising that no one sells an adapter to fit the auto?....
