hi guys, my mini wont stop running cold and im lost for ideas as to what it could be other than the thermostat. ive checked everything else is fine so im hoping it will be caused by the thermostat opening too soon.

now my question is, does a thermostat quoted at 88c BEGIN to open at 88c or does it start opening earlier and sort of average out at 88? i ask this because after testing my thermostat in water with a thermometer, it begins to open at 82c and is fully open by about 90c. is it opening too early?

thanks in advance for any replies!

its wax stat so it will never open accurately as long as it is opening and closing it will be doing its job. 82 isn't overly cold
When you say its running cold is this what you are seeing on the temp gauge or is the heater not working.

well it opens and closes fine, just lower than i expected.

also it runs cool as in the temp guage stops right on the blue mark and never goes higher. the same gauge on my 998 engine went closer to the middle mark.

also the engine seems to need to run with a rich mixture otherwise it seems a little choked when accelerating. the engine is a 1275 MG metro as standard by the way and head drilled out for heater take off.

Is that with the same sensor?

Hi I had this problem and found the wrong thermostat was fitted. I had an 82 deg instead of 88deg. They are marked on the top face with the temperature. After early 80's they were changed to 88deg. This made a noticable improvement to running and the gauge always comes to normal now.
