I have a 92' Spi Mini Cooper, and since i've owned the car, the temp gauge in the dash has never worked! I think it is about time I sorted it. Just wanted sme help on what sensor I would need to re new for it to work. I do not have the cylinder head temp sensor on my model.

The temp sender itself is at the bottom of the rab , on the side closest to the grille . check out the wires down there and the sender itself as you where reckoning on doing . Dont take out the sender when the engine is hot as the coolant will be fireing out all over the palce and burning you

seriously have a check of the thermostat, nice and easy to get at and if it is like mine you can tell it's not working before even trying a test on it -once i'd replaced that the guage in the dash reads fine

if it moves straight to red that would suggest to me that is an electrical fault somewhere - someone will be along to advise!! but it's not the same asnot working at all so a different problem to the op

That sensor is only for the secondary cooling fan, located in the wing facing towards the rad, It switches the relay when it reaches a certain temperature. The temperature sensor for the gauge is located on the inlet manifold on the SPi I believe.

that was my original reply but edited to ref the one at the bottom of the rad but thought unusual there was no other problems as the coolant temp sender under the throttle body also help regulates fueling and if thats up the duff then the car wouldnt start too well ( If at all ) and run very badly as the ecu will think its up to temp ( 60c ? ) and flood the engine . My bad there thou on which sensor the guage picks up on as thought it was the one in the rad which as you say is connected to the secondary fan in the wing .
