hi all
i just got the car ready to go on the road and the water pump has decided to pack in so should i replace the timing chain when i am replacing the wtaer pump or should i replace anything else while i am in there

i opted for the larger impellar pump for improved cooling

No?

Water pump. 4 bolts.

Timing chain. Crap tone of bolts coupled with pigging about getting the timing right,

so no point there isnt any noise coming from it anyway
just used to when changing newer cars water pumps the idea was to do the timing belt at the same time

thanks

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to check it out, the tensioners can wear through, chains tend to last a fair while though. Depends how quick you want it on the road.
I suppose only extra work to check it is the bottom crank pulley removal and the ring of bolts round the casing.
Get a new gasket ready for refitting.

If it looks OK leave it alone.

If it isn't broken, don't fix it :)

I think thats because most new cars are a pig to change the water pump, and once done the timing belt is only a couple more bolts. On older cars like minis the WP isn't a big job to do, plus timing chains don't wear out dangerously like belts which can snap and ruin your engine, chains will stretch and slowly put your timing out but thats about it.

well if it isn't borken dont fix it , but if you think it will break then do someting about it .

single chains are not so good 20 pounds new dulpex chaing and a new tensioner ,

one less thing you have to worry about .

one of my 1275 motors snapped the diff pin smashed it thought the box casting . motor was totally std . so i have said i will never fit a std diff to a motor regardless of tune ever again

you shouldent really need a tensioner with a duplex chain, also it isnt just a case of just putting a duplex set up on, you have to countersink the screws on the back plate otherwise the chain will catch on them as its wider than a single chain (obviously) :)
