Hello. stupid question but cant find the info in my haynes manual. As i am looking at the engine from the front of the car what number is each cylinder? Also what is the firing order from the top of the dizzy going clockwise? I need all the info to make sure my leads are on the right plugs.

1 is nearest the radiator

and firing order is 1 3 4 2 anti-clockwise and 1 is normally around the 1/2 o'clock postion on the dizzy.

Oh i think i get it now. They are in order from 1 to 4 but it counts from the radiator rather from the left. And the firing order is 1 3 4 2.

No, cylinders from right to left in sequence. IE as you look at the engine with the rad on the right 4321

Dizy cap 1342 anticlockwise.

Better to get the engine to top dead center at the start of combustion stroke. That is, timing mark (notch) on the pulley lined up with the long tooth on the cover with both the inlet and exhaust valves closed on number one cylinder( and that is the one next to the rad). Once this has been achieved remove the dizzy cap and see which lead on the cap it points to, as guesworks says most likely around about 2 o clock, but it is better to check as it is not that uncomon that the dizy drive is installed two or three teeth out either way.

Now you have found number one cylinder on the dizy cap, the next to that anticlockwise is number 3 and so on

Check you dizzy cap for corrosion on the terminals, but apart from that with a missfire, I just renew the major ingnition components, condenser, points, leads and sparkies ( and cap and rotor arm if showing signs of excessive corrosion ) will cost very few pennies, and is easier than spending two hours figuring out what's broke... and the bits go into the maybe ok spares box...

Couldn't agree more with GW.

The points on my dizzy cap were looking a bit corroded and the rotor arm a bit grubby.

4 new spark plugs, a new cap and a new rotor arm later and it starts a dream. No point messing about with it for the sake of £20 or so.

Have already changed the plugs, leads, dizzy cap, points, condensor and coil and spent today changing the fuel pump. Got angry then and sat and had a pasty. Then i tried another new condensor and the misfire went away straight away. Went for a long test drive and everything was fine., Then as i got home the misfire and stutter began to happen again. Why i my mini eating condensors???
