im back again with more bloody questions ( sorry ) 93 automatic sprite 1275

ive got an oil leak , looking at the state of the road outside my house it looks pretty bad but i dont seem to be losing much oil, but then if you look at the pic it is prety bad, when checked it was just at the min point on the dip stick so i topped it up ( about a litre ) the first line is the day i topped it up the second line ( the longest ) is the day after when i came back from being on the road , ive cleaned it up and sat and watched but i cant for the life of me see where its coming from
any ideas or advice would be appreciated

the other thing is ( this might be really stupid ) but where the hell is my oil filter ? thats not it surely in the pic ? if so how the hell do i get that off ?

and lastly i noticed this wire was rotted of doesnt seem to be affecting anything i was just wondering if any one had any advice on it , ill cut it back and put a new connector on it any way , i was just wondering

oh whilst i was under there i noticed that the passenger side front wheel arch was pipping hot and seen this pipe hanging down ? , should it be connected to some thing or is supposed to be just hanging ? the pictures where taken from looking over the top of the wheel and also from looking in from the side

1. yes that is oil filter .. see http://www.somerford.....Oil Pipes.pdf
just undo retainer at end .. filter is inside ...

(note for future ref ... all part catalogues are there .. http://www.somerford...dfs/index.html)

2. this wire should be connected to the free connector on the lid. this is the brake fluid level switch ..
http://www.somerford...ster-Servos.pdf

3. this is the fresh air duct supply to the car and should be connected to the back of the fresh air vent through the bulkhead.

Firstly, are you checking the oil correctly? It's a bit more than just reading the dipstick with an auto? Here's how: http://www.mra-minis...i-automatic.htm

Can you give us an idea of where the oil is leaking from?

It could be coming from a number of different places, the sump plug could be one or even around the rocker cover gasket, often they get over torqued and oil can splurge out from there and run all the way down the engine, however that amount of oil looks like it could be the sump plug or the oil filter not fitted quite right. Let us know on your findings.

You can discount oil filter leakage.... on a manual may be but that is just not enough of a leak for an automatic.

As for oil leak paths, there are loads of them on a Mini, the best thing to do is thoroughly clean and dry the engine and transmission, and then take it for a 5 mile drive to see what is happening.

Don't go above 30 mph so keep to minor roads.... this will help to keep the oil where the leak is

right drained oil and changed oil filter , refilled with oil, warmed the engine up, turned it off waited and took a reading it is now between the min and max markers, i think i found the leak, no idea what it is or how im going to fix it so ive uploaded a video

also im now getting a really strong burning smell when i go over 50mph , there are no lights on the dash, every thing seems to be working ok, and when i park up get the bonnet up i cant see or smell anything  , im am really concerned about the smell though

the car is fine untill you go over fifty, then if i sit at 60 it seems to die down ( the smell that is ) then it comes back later on , but stopping or sitting at lights it goes away

any way here is the video of the leak any help would be appreciated
cheers

What does it smell like Oil coolant etc..... ?

The oil leak in the vid looks like an output shaft seal, however it could also be from above, such as gaskets.... tranmission to engine, diff cover (although unlikely) if its a 998 look at the tappet chest seals...

It is or should be an easy fix.... depending on what has caused the leak ? If the canister is damaged then it will be a new/2nd hand canister....

Otherwise a new seal may do the job....

Paper ? that sounds like coolant, I think your heater matrix may have failed :)

really, there was a new one fitted just before christmass 2010 ?

burning paper is the best way i can describe the smell, but its been a few days since i changed the oil and filter and the smell doesnt seem as bad ( still there but not as strong )

like ive said there is no smoke, no signs of anything burnt in the engine , and everything seems to be working fine, i never thought about the matrix, ill try the heating in the morning , and let you know

cheers
