Hi,

The coolant in my 2004 mini has been leaking out the bottom of the car so used radweld to try to sort the problem out which it has now stop leaking but the coolant is still going out of the tank very quickly that if I make a journey I have to top up after every journey also while running the car to see if it was still leaking the coolant bubbled up and burt out from under the cap. I have taken it to a garage and they said it is fine that there are no holes or blockages anywhere and have told me to pick it up but obviously something wrong that the tank is emptying constantly!! Can anyone help?

Is your MINI a One, Cooper or Cooper S?

Replace the coolant pressure cap, check the plastic expansion/header tank for splits/leaks and the bottom front corners of the radiator for leaks. Also check/replace the thermostat and its housing complete, all are very common failure points on Mk1 New MINI cooling systems (up to 2006).

Other things to check are is there an airlock in the system? MINI's need careful bleeding if the coolant is drained or gets low, there are at least 3 bleed screws depending on model. Also the electric cooling fan has a high and low speed resistor........are both speeds cutting in at correct temperature and/or if air con is fitted and switched on.

Note: On the Mk1 MCS the pressure cap is different and fitted on the expansion tank, on the One and Cooper it is on/near the engine filler point.
