I am thinking of making a speaker board for underneath the rear bench next, maybe a dash :D .

The pattern is made up of 8 triangles of verneer with the same grain that when stuck together make a semi circle.

Veneering generally is, large sheets cost a fortune because they are almost impossible to slice and are very fragile. The trick usually is to hide the joins, this layout makes a design feature of them instead and is very nice too. This is what my grandfather did, he matched the veneers into sets and hid the joins on Mini and other British car dashes and trim for many years at Rokee. Very skilled and intricate job, he was the only veneer matcher there I believe.

Book match 8 pieces? Nice work, starting with a pair in the middle I assume and working out in matching pairs. This will look great in other places but don't go overboard. Speaker boards look great if they are trimmed in the way that proper luxury cars are, with carpet up the first few inches and then other trim above. Keeps the trim cleaner too and will stop the veneer soaking up damp from the floor if you go for veneer. Edge bound carpet to the height of the door steps all the way around the back looks good.

i think if you did a dash to match that would be brilliant, maybe even some door cappings, but as said above, dont go mad with it. definatley think you need to do it somewhere else to tie it together if you know what i mean? rather than just being one odd bit that doesnt match anything else

veneer just means a small piece of wood, usually a slither like you would get on a cupboard to make it look expensive

Yeah because marquetry/parquetry only LOOKS expensive....

Fine furniture is always veneered, veneering means you can use a more dimensionally stable and stronger wood as a stubstrate to build the piece from and cover it with a more decorative finish. You couldn't produce decent joinery from a big old burl for example because they are always funny shapes and warp in odd ways due to the growth patterns. Veneering can be a way to hide a cheap carcass under a good finish yes but if done properly it is way more expensive than a solid piece. The interiors of top end cars and aircraft are veneered over machined aluminium or engineered composites these days, way more expensive than solid wood made to the same shape but more dimensionally stable and lightweight.

theres loads of ways to veneer, that looks quality

not all fine furniture is made with veneer, depends completely what it is/how much the wood has been allowed to 'move' before using and how good the furniture maker was.

there was an old rule,

"if you had all of your fingers, you wernt a good machinist"

ive got 8 fingers and 2 thumbs :D

Well sort of my full names Edward but have been called woody as a nickname from birth it was just a coincidence i went into the furniture making trade :D

What dan is saying is right in that the sort of patterns you can create in veneer would be impossible in solid wood because of the issue with wood movement.

Here is a good picture of a "starburst" veneer i did for my latest project shows the veneers being build up. ( the reason it looks so messy with the glue is because i was using animal glue, which is reposition-able.

The project in question, (its laying of its side and is unfinshed)
