I want to make my own up because I'm not too keen on the way teh tank screws to the rear valance on vans etc.

this is a mini we are talking about i doubt they would have used any special materials for something a nominal as a fuel tank

They are simple mild steel with 10 to 20 % carbon. If you make your own, don't forget to line the surface that contacts the tank with something that will prevent chafing and preferably something that won't hold water.
