The wiring for the rev counter should already be fitted to your loom (the looms were no different on the models with or without rev counters), and should be just dangling loose behind your existing clocks.

I think there should be a white wire with black stripe/tracer, and a green wire with orange stripe/tracer. They should just slot onto the new rev counter.

Check what style of clocks your existing ones are first. I think I remember reading that if you have Nippon Seiki clocks, you can not fit Smiths clocks (or a least its not that simple), and vice versa. Don't hold me to that one though!

With your car being a 1989 model, I am almost certain they will be Nippon Seiki clocks, meaning you'll probably have to get another set of Nippon Seikis.

It isn't all that difficult to swap the clusters over. The metal bracket that the clocks sit in can be removed by removing 4 nuts on the engine side of the bulkhead. This may be underneath the foamy soundproofing so you may have to peel some of it back. Disconnect the speedo cable and then the wires and multiplug that are attached. The surround is just screwed on I think. You'll need a new bracket for a set of 3 dials, as the 2-clock bracket is smaller. I got mine off someone breaking a Mini on here, so just ask around.

Instead of changing over to Smiths clocks, you can always add a rev counter from another set of Nippon clocks - the 3-clock cluster is just a 2-clock with a rev counter slid on. This means you can keep your current mileage and can sell the 2-clock cluster on. You just have to swap the Circuitboards over (so your current clocks + the rev counter gets the 3-clock PCB, and the old clocks now minus a rev counter get the 2-clock PCB), if that makes any sense! There is a Youtube video on how to do it, if you want me to try and dig it out.

I thought there was a video, but maybe there wasn't. I certainly can't find it now. Its pretty simple to explain anyway:

Take your current clocks out. The big grey plastic thing that covers the clocks should just be held on by a few screws which you can see if you turn it over. Once the clocks are out, undo all of the little screws that hold the PCB (printed circuit board) on the back. One its off, put it to one side, along with the screws. Now take your new 3-clock setup, and do exactly the same thing - turn it over and take the PCB off.

The rev counter, if I remember correctly, will now just slide off. Take the 2-clock PCB and fit it to the set off clocks you have just removed the rev counter from. Slide the rev counter onto your original set of clocks, and fit the 3-clock PCB. Simply just swap the fascias over too (the big grey cover things).

Find a new, larger bracket to sit them in and re-mount to the car. Hey presto - a rev counter AND you've kept your original mileage :)

I don't think these clocks are Nippon Seiki, the circuit board on the back is different to mine. Looks more like the Smiths 3 clocks?

Yep, you're right. The ones on Ebay are Smiths (easily recognised by the PCB on the back, as you mentioned). Im not sure exactly when they changed over, but sometime during the mid-late 80s for sure.
