Am thinking of a future project and have had a look on here, and useing the search facility have come across much info. - I have a mazda V6 engine, and I know its gonna be a bloomin big task but I just trying to get an idea on things here

For starters heres a few questions

1) Front or Rear engined
2) Fwd or Rwd
3) can you convert the current subframe if fwd or would it have to be a manufactured unit.
4) legality of conversion would you have to get the conversion tested ?


Theres loads more questions but for now I think thats a start, If anyone knows some answers or has some thoughts please let me know. Or if you could point me in the right direction towards a suitable website that may contain some answers.

I beleive that anything is possible, if you want it enough, at the moment I havent got a clue so would need a hell of a lot of input and thought before I really consider doing this.

What you going to be using it for? Purely as an engineering project? Daily driver? Track days?

There is a mini with a v6 GM (Vectra) in it.. that's transverse FWD, and lets just say it looks like an engine with mini stuck to it.

The mazda is only an 1.8 is it not, so the block should be smaller than the GM, as they say, anythings possible with some metal and a roll of gaffa tape :cheese:

Ok this is a 2.0L V6 Mazda engine - will be mainly used as a weekend car, 1/4 mile, fun car, so will need to be roadworthy.

As I said i am just looking at the feasability of it at the moment, mainly due to the fact i have a spare 2.0L V6 engine and hopefully come the summer will have a bit of spare time to start a project, other than the Clubman I am currently doing.

I am wanting easy option really FWD Front engined, but am dubious as to the stability of the car, especially under braking, due to the weight at the front end. RWD Rear engined would make it an impractical weekend car, due to the fact that you will have lost half the space inside the car.

Another option would be to make it Front engined and RWD, tho again I fear traction may be a problem ..

I always thought that a weekend car, was a weekend car BECAUSE it would be impractical? :wink:

Keep the front subframe, and put the fuel tank, battery, etc under the bonnet, then chop out the whole rear bulkhead, the majority of the floor, and somehow support the car so you can get a spaceframe made up to support the engine + suspension :wink:

if you find that making your own suspension is too hard, you could try and make it fit mini CV joints, and just chop up a front subframe?







whatever option you choose - it's going to be a MASSIVE task!

whats your budget? you could start talking to one of the race specialists companies to make you up a frame/rollcage and engine support. Why not use a rover v8? on a renault gearbox? more power, more tuneable and cheap as chips
