Hi all,

Can anyone point me in the direction of someone that has the Rover diagnostic Testbook for the mini mpi in the mansfield/newark/lincoln area?

I have searched far and wide and nobody seems to have them anymore, everyone that does the work local use snap-on equipment and the car just wont talk to it.

The mini is driving us mad with its little problems and really needs diagnosing properly. Its continuing to have a slight misfire/hesitation at around 2k rpm (at speed and usually under load...putting the accelerator to the floor gets rid of it), so far i have changed:

Coolant temp sensor
All plugs and leads
Thermostat & Expansion tank (full system flush)
Lambda sensor

I have tested the ambient air temp sensor with an ohm meter and thats within parameters also. Please can someone who knows these troublesome little things help!!

Its a registered July 2001 car and has just done 38k, totally 100% standard.

Kind regards,

Ash & Sarah

Reading a little more on the forum its seems we are not alone with this problem.... looks VERY common!!! Doh!!

Ours does not pop through the inlet manifold however, apart from this problem the engine is great.

The MPi has a standard OBDII interface and I hooked up an snapon diagnostic unit to one the other day.... not overly pleased with the 23 error codes..

Thanks for your reply!

We have tried it now at 2 diagnostic centres (generic) and neither of them would communicate with the car.... all you can hear is a slight ticking behind the dash. (tell a lie, one started communicating with the car and then it decided otherwise and from then on no communication)

I was told only the rover testbook equipment would work reliably... just cant find any : (

Had a word with Rutland Minis, as he has an ACR4 code reader...

Bit nearer to you than me, give him a bell on 07533 488682

Although the connector is OBD II, the software and ECU is not OBD II compliant. So the computer/software/code reader must have Testbook like capabilities.
Sykes ACR, Crypton and others can do this.

Thank you all so much for your replies!

It really is a little terror this mini.... no matter what we do it loves to fight us every step of the way. Ideally i would like someone who knows exactly what they are looking at to give it a thorough going over and point out anything that i should replace (exhaust components, engine mounts, steady bars etc) as it does tend to vibrate alot at around 60mph! Its only done 38k however.

Fingers crossed with so many of them all doing a similar fault its only a matter of time before someone figures it out (fault in the wiring loom somewhere maybe??)

Will the ACR gear find the problem do you think?

Im starting to feel doubtful as so many of you have had the same fault and been unable to track it down : (

Must be a build quality problem perhaps?

Yeah the ACR gear will talk to the ECU.....

sadly, like all the diagnostic 'computers', it wont 'tell' you whats wrong.... Thats down to the operator interpreting the data.....

Many thanks for your help.

Do you have a rough idea on what could be causing the symptoms?

off the top of my head... no!

Throttle position sensor?

The lambda sensor a genuine one or an ebay special?
correct plugs fitted?
Correct leads?

Valve clearances ok?
