Hello,
I'm all new to the mini so forgive me if this is a obvious question.
I'm thinking about getting the stage one kit for my 998 from mini spares but i don't want to use the K&N element or for that matter horrible stock air filter.
So if i get a K&N cone air filter from somewhere else what carburetter needle would be the best.
Cheers
Jack

Well they will sell you the individual items yes, but you do need to consider that the whole point of a well developed stage 1 kit, is that the components are specifically selected to best compliment each other. If you start substituting in different parts, then you may not therefore be getting the best in terms of performance or efficiency.
As for the needle just take the standard richer needle supplied in the kit for a 998 (presumably this will be for an HS4 Carb, so something like an AAA or an AAU). To get maximum benefit from any stage 1 kit, you will need to get the whole thing set up on a rolling road after any way and you may well find that whichever needle you choose may get replaced with one more suited to your specific engines requirements during the session.
As for a high flow air filter, your other alternatives are something like a pancake or cone item, for best performance a cone filter is best used in conjunction with a stub stack though. However despite your reservations, the high flow element placed inside the standard air filter box is widely regarded to give optimum performance, which is possibly why it is supplied with the well developed stage 1 kits such as the minispares offering. This filters performance is supposed to be most effective with a series of half inch holes drilled into the side wall of the housing to improve air flow.
