Hey guys

What do the lights on the dash mean? The orange light above the ignition light turned on, and shortky after the car stopped, so I guess it turns on when the battery isn't being charged, but would appreciate some help with which lights are which

Cheers

Two lights, one is battery not charging, the other is oil pressure low.

I hope it's the battery one!

Red light illuminates, probably flickering if charging is not effective. Although my experience of a non-charging battery is that if the engine is running it will keep running, not just stop.

Orange light is an entirely different matter, I've heard it call the "its already too late" light, if the orange light fails to extinguish your engine will definately be under risk of serious damage. If it was on and the engine just stopped, and it won't start (or even turn over) there is a chance its seized. I hope for your sake this hasn't happened. :techsupport:

AAARGH I hope so too! The light bulbs have popped out and just shoved into whichever holes as far as I am aware, not entirely sure what the previous owner has done to it, but it seems to run OK, and when I put a new battery in it started and ran fine, so I'm pretty sure that is what it will be. How do i fix the alternator? Just get a new/reconditioned one, or is their something easier/cheaper?

Cheers

Its quite possible to strip an alternator and replace the bushes etc, but for a guaranteed repair its often worth buying a refurbished one from a factor.

I'd start by checking your oil level just to make sure!

Then look at the engine and battery earth straps, make sure they're not frayed, and have good connections to the body/engine/battery.
Then check the battery voltage with engine off (about 12V) and while running (about 13.6V), then if it's low when running, consider the alternator.
