Hello,
I have a low mileage rebuilt 1275 A+ standard four speed gearbox, rebuilt by Morespeed. Every time I try to down shift to 1st gear while rolling I get some grind. The only way I can down shift to first without grind is if I am at a stop. Any ideas?

Yes, don't downshift to 1st...
I am no gearbox expert, but I think 1st gear has no snycro, so it will grind. 1st should only be selected when stationary, or while going very slowly, ie 2 mph, and if you double de-clutch...

I have this problem and live with it fine. I have been told by my local garage there is no Syncro on 1st- But all my other similar aged minis did not have this problem.
I have been told by a Mini garage it is proberbly a worn Baulk ring (not sure on spelling) in the gear box which is a strip down and rebuild job- £600+
I would assume it is likley to be the gearbox will need a refurb to cure the problem, however it is quite easy to live with.

L400RAS, thanks a lot for the info. This is the first Mini I've owned, been rebuilding it over the past few years. The gearbox and engine are newly rebuilt so what you say makes since, as well as what the article you provided stated. I have no problem shifting at a stop or when waiting a few seconds with the clutch depressed. It settles my mind...thank you.

I thought the gearbox was a four synchro effort. Mine has no problems selecting 1st gear even at 15-20mph. There are four baulk rings in a four synchro gearbox so if as people are suggesting 1st has no synchro, What is the fourth baulk ring for? Im no expert and stand to be corrected, I have built a few boxes over the past couple of years and they have all been of the four synchro type.

Early boxes are 3 synchro, every bx from 1973 were four synchro...
If it crunches into 1st, whether stationary or moving then it's most likely a failed/worn baulkring.
