Just got my new mini. its a 1995 sprite spi. (am aware there is a different section for spi but i dont think its a issue related to it being spi)

when i accelerate hard in 2nd gear it judders. its like when you change into the wrong gear thats way too low for the speed you are doin. it also did it a couple of times when i lifted off the power while doing around 70mph in 4th on the motor way. any one got an idea what might cause this? cheers

wheel spin wouldnt cause that issue on the motorways, check your engine steadies and engine mounts and also also could be related to CV's or drive flange being worn. if ot those then pehaps something wrong in the gearbox thats allowing a bit of play between the input and ouput shaf so the gears are not meshing correctly and slip past each other under high load.

just to drag this back up but today i was doing some motorway driving and it kept juddering again at random times, i think Andywade might be right in that the gears are not meshing as i had to keep clutching down and going back into gear for it to work again. it also did it in third gear as i was slowing down which is the first time it has done that. just after someone to confirm that it probably is the case of the gears not meshing properly befor i take it down to a garage for what will most likely be an expensive labour bill. cheers in advance

Gears not meshing will be catastrophic - tell us more about this 'juddering' - is it jumping out of gear - or is the clutch slipping - or is it just a bit of vibration who feel at certain speeds?

I have a sort of similar problem with my mini. I've got s/c drop gears so the juddering effect can be heard very well and it's felt in the car too. If you look through 'mini chat' on here and listen to my in car video you may hear the noise when slowing down quite slow. Also when accelerating in any gear mine sort of makes a whurring noise as if you're accelerating and decelerating but very very fast. Is this the same as yours?

Evan.

Gears not meshing would be a little interesting, as for that to happen the shafts would have to move... In a mini gearbox the gears don't move in relation to each other, they are permanently meshed.

I suspect what is happening is a shaft is moving, which will result in catastrophic failure, and would put money on the double roller bearing breaking up..

I recommend you don't drive it any more until it has been looked at.

its not just a vibration it is the same sort of feeling as if you had just dropped down too many gears for the speed your doing. i tryed lifting off completely then going back on the power, and in desperation i tried more power but niether worked. the only thing i could do was clutch down and go back into gear.i had better take it into a garage soon then, cheers guys
