Oh yeah, loads of cars have them. Mine included!
It's just not allowed, I can't remember the rules though. But it comes up here quite regularly, and the answer is always your not allowed.
But loads of people risk it, mine has had them for around 18 months without problems. However you never know when you'll get pulled up about them.

It is illegal to have a stick on plate.
it's not. look at the ariel atom for one.
but as a mini has somewhere to mount the number plate vertically then you have no need to use a stick on plate.

The following restrictions apply to registration plates:
All number plates from September 1, 2001 must display the new mandatory font and comply with British standards in relation to size, font and background.
Black number plates with silver or white numbers or letters may only be displayed on vehicles manufactured or registered before January 1, 1973.
Self adhesive number plates are illegal (i.e. plates stuck on the bonnet or sticker style plates.)
Number plates where screw heads are positioned to change the appearance of a letter or number are illegal.
Single line number plates on motorcycles are illegal.
Foreign style, British number plates are illegal.
If a number plate is cracked or broken and the damage makes the number difficult to read then an offence is committed.
From here
Loads of cars have them, but you're not allowed to have them, people just get away with it.

As said by everyone, self adhesive number plates are illegal even though they may be made fron the correct reflective backing and display characters of the correct font, size and spacing.i want to print a stick on number plate for the front, have all the equipment where i work to do it but i have a few questions...

There is however no reason in the MOT manual to fail such a plate but it must be displayed as close to vertical as is reasonably possible. If you use the square format you have suggested then the top row will lie mainly on the curved/ horizontal part of the bonnet and may be a reason for failure.
It doesn't really matter which side it is mounted on.

I stuck mine on like this at the MOT station, 30 seconds before the MOT, and it's been on ever since.
I've never been pulled over or reported, or even talked to about it. My next door neighbour's a copper.
I've had many people tell me it's illegal, but unless someone important tells me (not just angry old people), i'll leave it there. It's not as if the car's hidden away, either, it gets driven a lot, daily...

I have had but one minor incident. On a national rally in Wales in the middle of the night at a petrol station,a young copper said to me "Did you know your number plate is illegal?". I repled "yes, if I fitted a standard one it would have been knocked off by now", got back in the car, did up my full harness belts and drove off. Nothing else happened, ever. If you do fall foul of the law it's a £30 fine and no points.
