1989 Austin Mini 1275 Engine

My mini after driving it for a while starts to 'splutter' under full throttle as if there isnt enough petrol going to the engine. I was on the motorway today and it started doing it so I just had to very lightly press the throttle. The car then cut out on a slip road and wouldn't let me accelerate. I left it for a couple of minutes as the car wouldn't start and then it turned on again.

I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on this? I have been told it may be the fuel or air filter.

Thanks in advance

Jordan

P.S. when I tried to put full throttle on during the motorway there was a wiff of petrol that came about (if that helps)

A clogged fuel filter could cause fuel starvation. Sludge is sucked into the filter which restricts the fuel flow. If the engines switched off for a few minutes some of the sludge can drop out of the filter allowing fuel to flow through it again. Fire up the engine and the cycle starts up again.

A dirty airfilter can restrict flow at high revs / load but the engine should still work at lower at lower speeds albeit with potentially lower performance.

Check both filters. If they need replacing it might be a cheap fix to your problem

Hope this helps

Adam

I think that sounds about right, thanks for your reply

It was tipping down with rain and the car wasn't overheating, plus the ignition coil has been changed recently so I'm not sure it would be that, thanks anyway
