As topic title says, was given a maestro van with 1275 engine and dodgy vw box??
Anyway, the steering wheel has some nasty hard grit stuff which has probably accumulated over the years from dirt etcc
Does anyone have any idea how to get it off? before I start hacking it off with a knife?
Cheers

Scouring sponge and soapy water usually gets most rubbish of any steering wheel I clean. Its unbelievable how quickly it builds up!
Excellent to hear, thanks for that.
The stuff is totally nasty, I had no idea if soap alone would get it off, but I will give it a go. I should get some pictures up I think!!

Is it in AA yellow? My Dad had one whilst working as an AA patrolman when I was a kid. I have a great pic somewhere of me sat on its bonnet about 4 years old! Maybe wipe it off with panel wipe or thinners?
Yeah, I would say it was AA yellow
Here's some pictures for you!
I was thinking of just cleaning it out properly, cut some of the rust out as well. Seems ok, goes quite well.

I'm chuffed to bits, I can use it for work whilst the Mini goes off the road to get the MG Metro engine in.
Was thinking about spraying the black plastic grille and light surrounds in black, what do you think?

Personally I would leave it original mate. Like I say its a real rarity nowadays. Maybe see if you can track down some leyland wheel trims for it!
Thanks minibarnerz!
Bearded Midget: Yeah, I did think that myself, I shall leave it original!
Can you get Leyland wheel trims?????? that would be awesome if I could, to ebay!

You may be able to see the dirt on the steering wheel, I managed to get most of it off, any other steering wheels fit?

Fuel gauge does not work, have to get it fixed!
