My wife had a couple of new front tyres fitted today. When she got home looked at the wheels and the nuts are all chewed to bits ! They are the later type with the stainless cover so you have to use a hex socket (or the wheel brace that was in the boot!). Went back and apparently thay did not have the right size socket so put on a 19mm and that just span round and so then hammered a 17mm bi-hex on!!!!!

To be fair before I even asked they said they will pay for a new set of nuts but they are such a mess that you have to hammer the right size socket on and there are 2 I do not know how I will get off!! Anyone know that if I chisel off the stainless cover does say a 17mm fit for example because they must have used a big hammer as I cannot get anything to go on at all!

just hope I do not get a puncture before the new nuts arrive.

Not been a good day.

The later rover nuts are hopeless. But if you can get the 'cover' off, then a normal socket will remove the nuts fine

If you can get the stainless cover off, you can jam a 17mm on :D

This is why I don't let the tyre and exhaust monkeys anywhere near my mini anymore!! If it's not this sort of thing, then it's them over torquing the wheel nuts with an air wrench until they shear the studs off, or them wrecking the floor pans by using them as a jacking point :)

These days I source my own tyres and take my wheels down to the tyre and exhaust centre for them just to swap the tyres over, I don't take the mini itself anywhere near the places. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that tyre and exhaust centres do exist that can be trusted with a classic mini, it's just that I've never yet found one!! :D

So true. I haven't found one as I simply haven't taken the risk again! Did it once when I had my new wheels and tyres, but I asked to be with them when they do the putting on (I was meant to be back at work a hour later and needed the car on the road for l2b last year, otherwise I would have done it myself). They were fine about it. :)

Bidford Tyres (Bidford Upon Avon, Warwickshire) is that place! everytime my mini goes in without fail, they put it on the MOT ramp, because it has the sliding jack in the centre that has the funny ends which are telescopic and can change the cups that sit in them, they always jack it up on the subframe with that jack, and never go near it with the trolly jacks or bottle jacks! never had an issue with the wheel nuts there ever, and they even give me the shiney metal look valves and dust caps instead of the black plastic ones and they dont charge anymore for them! top guys! wouldnt take my mini anywhere else!

Guy who runs it is a top bloke, and all of the guys he has working there are proper decent guys,

Ditto.

You've even got to watch them fitting the tyres or they're liable to scratch/chip the rims!
