I'm currently changing a rear wheel bearing, and can't get the old outer races out of the hub. I've tried gently tapping out using the cutouts in the inner spacer at 12 and 6 o clock, both sides but cant get anything to budge at all. Anyone have any tips? I dont want to hammer to hard, incase I damage the inner surfaces of the hub. I can see myself having to take the hub to a garage somewhere to see if they can help, but that'll be tricky without a car! :) I'm using / replacing genny timken tapered bearings by the way.

Stop being a fairy and hit them. They don't want to move with "gentle tapping" otherwise its scrap
If you are hitting the bearing outer race you are not going to damage the hub. Knock it out evenly and it will come out easier

You might manage to rig up a puller from a large nut 'n bolt & a thick washer, or other bit of steel, ground down to just squeeze in on the diagonal.

It might also have been fitted with loctite, so a bit of heat may help too.

I should have added that i started out gentle, but by the end I was goin for it like mad. Few hits each side then I guess you mean?

If you look at the bearing edges you will see if it is sitting level or not, it may require 1 knock on one side and 3 on the opposing side. If you havce been hitting it just on one side it will not come out as its trying to turn in the hub
Use a decent hammer and punch, 2lb will be fine

Right well so far I've broken a crappy punch and a screw driver, and I've been hitting both sides trying to knock it out straight. Think if I can wedge a bar across the top of the race then I might be able to fashion a puller of sorts. Any more tips on that idea? Thanks.

wack it in the oven for 5 minutes to warm it up, then grab it with pliers put it in a vice and give it a right good hit, if you dont have any good punches i find a extension from my 3/8ths ratchet set works well

hope you get it sorted rob

Decent sized punch and a reasonable hammer really should be fine. Then try some heat as has already been suggested.

Don't worry too much about the hub

an extension from my 3/8ths ratchet set works well

That is not intended for impact and is likely to break or shatter and also wrecks the tool for next use. A punch or chisel is for hitting not a screwdiver or socket extentions

True, but I'm a student and I can't afford to buy all the proper tools! :) Got them free now, used a blowtorch and a 3/8ths extension.

well yes but using a extension as a punch is much better than using a screw driver
