1993 Rover Mini Rio 1275cc:
upon driving, there was a sound resembling sucking air. upon checking the carburetor, air filter and housing, none of these seemed to be faulty. on closer inspection, I seem to have an exhaust blow coming from the point where the outlet manifold joins to the exhaust downpipe. because of the tight position and angles behind the main engine block, i cant get in with the tools to get it tight enough, or even if the parts join together with the clamp tight enough at all. i was wondering if there was a specialist tool, or way of tightening the joint, or if it was possible to purchase a new manifold with the downpipe all in one peice. the manifold is the type that goes into one pipe before it joins the downpipe... any help/advice/product suggestions would be hugely appreciated!
Thanks in advance, Adam:

What your describing sounds like the one piece cast combined inlet/exhaust manifold.

This can be replaced with two seperate manifolds, inlet and exhaust. Basically a stage 1 kit which would give better performance and shift the join to below the engine.

something along these lines

This is a standard set up... exactly the same as my Mini 35.. basically I've found it a pig, it still blows a bit but getting the right clamp is very difficult! I'm sure my exhaust is suppose to go up the manifold taper more than it does, currently it allows for very little error in the shape!

Mine is a standard down pipe and standard manifold. You may need to unclamp the manifold clamp, take it apart and clean both down pipe and manifold of all sealant and try again. Make sure the gearbox bracket is holding the downpipe firmly.

i was thinking of getting a stage 1 kit anyway, do you know anything about fitting them?
does anyone know the benifits of installing one?

people usually get this problem when cheap exhaust clamps have been fitted (by people like quickfit or whoever), i used to use the big thick clamp and never had any problems with the exhaust blowing but i'm not sure if the original clamps are still available any more.
