Mini city e:
1988:

First of all the gas pedal(don't really like to call it gas pedal but I strangely can't think of anything else :D) since I got Nicholas, that's the mini, the pedal over time has got stiffer and stickier making it very hard to drive smoothly and on occasions it doesn't return quickly enough at all.

Secondly, a knocking noise has recently been on the rise, I did a long trip out at the weekend and at the end of both legs of the journey it was emphasised or louder than normal. The noise appears mostly when in gear with little to no revs on, for example when going down a hill. I have started running v power for the last two tanks full but the noise was apparent before that from what I can remember.

Is there anything that stands out as being blatantly obvious as to what the problem is before I get my hands dirty?:

Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem?
Not anything that crops into mind, it's a pretty standard 998mini.

Thanks in advance for any help.

sticky accelorator:

detatch the cable from the carb, then take the clip off the top of the accelorator pedal and pull it out through the drivers footwell. inspect for kinks (these make a lot of difference even if small) if it doesnt have any, put plenty of grease on it and feed it back through. reattach to crab/pedal. simple!

not sure about the knocking noise, sorry!

Cheers,

Matt

Is the knock coming from the engine itself? Could it be coming from the wheels?

At low revs, it could be the engine jolting back and forth if the engine steady bushes are knackered, or not done up tight enough.

With the sticky accelerator pedal, i'd replace the cable. Only costs a few quid.

I speak from experience, as i left mine for aaaages after it first started to stick, and it got to the point where the throttle would get stuck wide open, which is slightly alarming.

Lesson learned!

As for the knocking, as has been said, it's most likely knackered engine mounts/bushes. Best way to check is to grab hold of your oil filler cap, and give the engine a damn good shake forwards and backwards. If there's any considerable movement (or clunking), then there's your problem. New engine mounts, and steady bushes.

Good luck. :)

As minilandy said just replace the cable there only about a fiver (look on minispares for the nylon lined one)
Check the engine isn't loose and I'd also take a look at your earth strap
Mine was a bit shot at and the accelerator cable tends to take up the slack when it starts to go and your new cable will be back to being rubbish again in no time if that's happening ( 5 min fix )
