i would have to agree and would say its likely to be the ends, but then it might not be. Do a comparative compression test (compare all 4 cylinders), might be worth fitting an oil pressure guage (loss of oil pressure when running (if it still runs) when the ends have gone). Doubt it'd be the fuel pump, but its a good idea to check, as has already been said. 12thou is a bit tight for the tappets, try a couple of thou larger to be sure.

an outside chance it could be a headgasket from memory, do a comp check and does it wound like a 4 cylinder car or a lawnmower
