1974 Mini Clubman S, 1100 Motor,
G'day all, I want to rebuild my motor (Not transmission) and when down at my local mini parts store was told that it is unwise to not rebuild the transmission as well, as this would lead to the transmission 'destroying' the engine from contaminants etc.
Is there any truth to this? I would have thought that with a few good oil flushes doing a rebuild would be fine, at the very least would be an improvement.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

dont quote me but i would have thought it would be ok to use the same gearbox, people sell second hand gearboxes that are not "cleaned" anyway.

if you had just spent a small fortune on a new engine would you then refit the dirty old sump pan you took in the first place ??
Its a recipe for a potential disaster

In other words, so long as you THOROUGHLY clean out the gearbox, there can't be any contamination, but if you just drain out the old oil and don't clean it, as Martin says you are asking for problems.

So most people seem to be in agreement then.
MRA: rebuild kits here are circa $350-$500 AUD, not exactly a small fortune. A colleague and myself can do the rebuild, however neither of us no jack about rebuilding a trans, and I don't particularly feel like paying $1500 for a trans job 'just because'.

I would not "rebuild" the gearbox....If its working then leave well alone....But as both MRA and COOPERMAN have said. Thoroughly clean the gearbox to get any bits of swarf and dirt out. This can be done without taking it apart......Ignore the statement below.......I really must get that changed.
