Mayfair
1991:

Good morning people,

I am thinking of changing the original mayfair steering wheel to MK1 Bakelite one. I lifted the central motif but the steering wheel nut seems to be too big for the spanners or pliers.

Is there any trick or should I go to Halfords?

Cheers!

There are two standard sizes - one is 1 5/16" (inch and five sixteenths) which is a useful socket to have as it's also the hub nuts (disc brakes) and tower bolts (on a post '76 car) plus a crankshaft bolt.

The other one is 1". I think this is in the airbag cars but not 100% on that. I know you need to use that with some of the later standard of Mountney hubs as the hole that the nut fits in isn't big enough to allow the larger nut plus a socket. Guess how many go in anyway and are tightened up with a screwdriver and a hammer?

Once the nut is loose - leave it on a few threads and pull on the wheel or bash it from behind to free it. It will be stuck on the splines and you look really silly if it comes free with a thump and breaks your nose. No I haven't - but I know a man who has and he was most upset that his wife seemed more bothered about him getting blood on the carpet than the fact that he was injured. Needless to say it was her that told the rest of us and we had a little chuckle (alright a huge laugh) at hs expense.

I'm sure it was a huge laugh indeed! I will need to make sure that doesn't happen to me, otherwise my wife will be merciless as well! lol

Cheers for sharing the story,

Justin

hey guys, just update the news that I've managed to swap the steering wheel and it looks fantastic!

Now just need to get the centre cap, and look like I've got to change all the dash boards as well! more missions! more fun indeed!

Thanks for giving me advice!
