what is the purpose of the thickest black cable that goes to the starter motor, it seems to come from under the car from the rear, is it a permanent live straight from the battery.

Yes, this is the main battery cable. Runs from the positive terminal on the battery inthe boot, through the boot floor, all underneath, then up to the starter motor pole. It supplies all electrical devices on the car.

Thanks mate thats great, I wondered what it was as the ident wasn't readable
If this cable is from the battery then that terminal it goes onto on the starter will be permanent live then I assume.
So do I take a switched live off the solenoid side of the starter for my electric fuel pump or is their a better place to take a switched live feed from?

Yes it's permanently live. It doesn't go to the starter motor as-such but rather to the solenoid (which might well be bolted to the side of the starter motor). Basically all it's doing is moving the positive battery terminal from the boot to a convenient place under the bonnet so that the rest of the car's electrical systems can be connected to the battery without a shed-load of wires having to run to the back of the car to connect to the battery.
Your fuel pump presumably wants to run whn the ignition is switched on so there isn't really a suitable terminal on the solenoid/starter (but keep reading as you likely will want to connect here anyway). They are either permanently live or live only when the key is in the cranking position. You need a feed that's live when the key is in the run AND start positions - you should be aware that there are some feeds that are disconnected when the key is moved to the crank position and this would result in the fuel pump being killed off when you try to start the car. Find a suitable feed on the fusebox - don't have a wiring diagram handy and don't kno what your car is but in general dark green is the colour you are looking for. Since you won't necessarily want to load that circuit with the pump (possibly pushing it beyond the caacity of the wires) use that to throw a relay. Connect the supply for the relay to the permanent live at the solenoid with the correct grade of wire and an inline fuse.
