Automatic to Manual Conversion : £500 + Parts + VAT

As I'm in the process of doing one I thought I would take the opportunity to show how I do it

Day 1

Remove everything, this is easy to do by dropping the front subframe assembly and engine in one go...

Leaving not a lot in the engine bay...

Why do I remove the subframe...

Basically because I prefer to use a manual subframe rather than spacers and the Auto' frame, it also means that the suspension can be checked and reconditioned as necessary when transferred over..

The weight of the auto' unit punishes the front suspension especially the cones, and most of the time, will need replacing.

Day 2

Install the clutch pedal and remote gear change mechanism.

Build up the replacement subframe ready for the engine

and then install the engine into the subframe...

Day 3

Drop the body onto the subframe/engine assembly, reconnect wiring, coolant pipes and newly added clutch master.

Subframe mounts, dampers, steering rack, bleed brakes and clutch... job done...

(pictures will follow)

No a replacement manual engine is used, however, that does not mean the auto' unit is of no use.

Depending upon the engine which is being replaced there are a number of parts which can be reclaimed, not limited to...

Head
Crank
Con Rods
Cam
Tin ware
Carb / injection unit
Manifolds
Dizzy
Alternator
Starter motor
Radiator

Pretty much everything apart from the block and the transmission

Pm me :)

I know how to convert an auto to run a manual box, it's just not cost effective to do it commercially.

There's plenty enough manuals available, I'm not sure of the ratio of manuals to auto's but must be in the region of thousands to one, if not tens of thousands to one, so seems a waste to machine something which does not machining.

This is great!  really helped but took me forever to find it. John how did you add the clutch pedal to the pedal box?  That's the issue I'm having right now

And you need to change the pedal spring as the auto one only has the hooked part for the brake pedal :)
