hi all,
im currently restoring a 74 clubby saloon 998, which has a set of 10" GB's which have 175 tyres on. however, it has drum brakes on the front, which doesnt really fill me with confidence, as in the future (once the car is up and running) i plan to modify the 998 or change for something bigger. so im looking to uprate the brakes to disc set up at the front. ive got the chance of a complete set of front hubs with calipers dics pads shafts etc pretty cheap (im on a budget!) so it seems a no brainer to get these and then just change to bigger wheels. i love the look of the 10's but cant really afford a proper 7.5 setup just now. so basically my question is (got there in the end!!) what kind of wheel size/width would work best for me? i want to give it a real nice low and wide look by dropping it and maybe using some spacers if needs be, so was thinking maybe 12x6? giving decent width but not too big for a small currently standard 998 lump? but i also like the look of some 13x7's but im reading that with my little engine they are probably going to do more harm than good? im not bothered about any arch modifications that will be required, and i havent picked any arches yet so will be picking them to suit the wheels!
thanks in advance!

drum brakes are not bad as everyone says they are, if they are maintained and looked after they work well, but if you plan on modifying the engine there is no point skimping on brakes. if you modify the engine or stick a 1275 engine in there and then modify that bigger brakes will be useful.
but on the subject of wheels, its pretty much personal opinion, 10's will get you to 60 quicker and 12's will give you a better top speed and are better. i think 13's are not really good for anything but then again thats personal opinion. if you are going to modify then engine, then budget for new brakes.
and stick with 10's they look best:D

i agree! i think my 10's with some spacers would look the nuts as i would be using it for more country road (brake/accellerate/brake/accellerate) so they would be good for that, whereas 12's seem to be the good allrounder. i think 13's are out the window to be honest! its more the width im after, just want them to stick out nice and wide to give it a nice low/wide aggressive looking stance!

then definatly 10's. i have never seen wide 12' wheels and i know that wide 10's look the mutts nuts!!!
it sounds like your mini is more of a weekend play toy rather than a daily driver, so 10's would benefit because of the quicker acceleration capability's:)

exactly it! i got the A3 diesel for work, the mini is for nice weather and mini events only! the widest 12's ive seen are 12x6, but i think i already have 10x6 now! so looks like ill have to fork out for some proper 7.5 set up afterall

well at least you will be able to stop.
the conversion kit is £222 quid but im sure you could pick up some calipers and flanges from a show, re build them (minisport have the rebuild kits) adn im sure you would have saved quite alot of moneys:)
