So, there was a random stranger that came in off the street during a diagnosis session in my 1997 MPI cooper.

she said that it was a fuel temperature sensor/switch that was causing the high idle that the car has been experiencing on start up.

does any one know where the location of this sensor is? or if it exists at all? any help is greatly appreciated.

There is no fuel temp sensor or switch.

If this was highlighted by a diagnostic, they tend to sometimes show 'fault' codes for stuff that just isn't there, since the diagnostic software is designed to cater For the whole Rover model range, not just the Mini.

Having had some experience with random strangers, particularly female ones, I find I sometimes have to translate their meaning. Now as Sprocket rightly points out there is no fuel temp sensor. There is however a COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR, which has a very large effect on idle speed. So do you think this is what she meant. Perhaps if you post us a photo of the random stranger we could perhaps open a forum vote to determine how hot she is

Mine runs at 1200rpm at least at all times! I also thought it was normal as he's been doing it for over 2 years :/

Every engine is set differently I guess but 1200rpm tick over does sound quite high. Is yours running rich?

Start the engine (in a garage if possible) walk round the bacck to your exhaust take a good sniff and if it really smells like half burnt petrol that means its really rich

In fact you were right... I told her I had never heard of a fuel temp sensor, but she was insistent (and not that hot). we eventually found that the wire to the temp sensor was grounded... cleaned up the wiring and the problem is solved!
