Good news!

Just got off the phone speaking to Footman James about my classic car policy the mini is under. Ive got a fibreglass front end in the garage and ive been toying with the idea of putting numbers on the doors (round white stickers) but theres been a couple of recent threads about these where some people seem to think its a big insurance no-no and others arnt sure.

So i can confirm that as long as the mod isnt PERFORMANCE related, you can do whatever you want and it wont affect your premium. So they wont charge for sticking a flipfront on it, or stickers with numbers on the door.

However, what they have said is that if anything happens to the car then they would only replace damages back to NORMAL stock items. So if i spend 3k on fibreglass panels and smash it up, id only get the cost of standard metal items back.

On that basis i wont be phoning them back should i whack a few stickers on it but i am gonna ring when the flipfront is done so they can write it down somewhere just incase. But im happy with that :)

Just because the stickers aren't performance mods and don't affect your premium, doesn't mean you shouldn't tell the insurance company.

Whatever mods you do, even the slightest thing, tell them because if you crash or get it nicked, i can guarantee you're policy will be called invalid because they may have influence the thieves interest in the car or your intention of driving the car more 'rallyesque' like the stickers would suggest.

The fact it doesn't increase the premium should be a further reason why you would want to make sure you tell them these kind of mods.

It depends on what you're doing too. Re the front end, Are you doing it as a fixed front or a removable front... you need to modify the structure of the car, It's not a case of chopping the old front off and putting a new one on.

im happy with the fact that matey on the phone insisted that stickers or body mods wont affect my premium or invalidate my insurance and should anything happen its just that they'd only pay out for standard parts rather than what work i do to it.

as said i will phone em after doing the flipfront. for the stickers, does that mean i should also tell them about the 'BMW MINI my arse!!!' sticker on the rear windscreen, or the tax holder that has writing on it too? i dont think so. i know what ive been told so i'll stick to what they say.

wasnt expecting a lecture, thought id just post up the FACTS i had been told rather than just my OPINION on what id do should i want to modify the car in terms of insurance.
