hi
my speedo stopped working and i found that the speedo drive pinion with 18 teeth was damaged. they no long make 18 teeth one but i managed to get hold of one and fitted it. the speedo worked for 3 days before it stopped again. The pinion has broke again, so now i am going to have to change the speedo drive gear system as there clearly must be something wrong inside. i know i can get to it by taking the radiator out because i have seen that someone has posted that fact on another forum.
My question is- since i am changing the speedo drive gears altogether do i have to get a replacement one that has 18 teeth?

Guessworks has good info on his site. Various combinations are possible as a means of calibrating speedos to different final drive ratios.

is it possible the inner speedo cable is sticking and putting too much torque on the pinion and causing it to break? you could try disconnecting both end of the cable and trying to turn the inner cable with your fingers or a set of needle nose pliers

That he does, and also has new 18 tooth pinions....
What is the car, final drive, wheels and speedo... reason being, there's more than one 18 tooth speedo pinion, which match to specific worm drives.

Hi,
thanks for your reply.
My car is a austin mini 1983. it has a metro 1293 engine with 12 x 5 wheels. i have just bought mini cooper mpi magnolia dials that i have not fitted yet.
I bought a 18 tooth pinion and it lasted 2 days before it too broke. I think i will have to replace the speedo drive gear system, is this correct?
