Jumped in my mini tonight and when I got above 50 mph I started to get a whining noise, there was no signs of any problems with the engine, no loss off power etc. what are the main things I can check before I take the engine out to look at the gearbox / diff.

Many thanks

Only in top gear? At lower speeds in other gears? Sure the fan belt is tight enough? Cat trapped under the bonnet??

Is it speed related.... ie change in frequency or volume the faster you go ?

Wheel bearing? I was going to suggest the gearbox main double roller bearing.....but i think that would make a whine all the time and not just above 50mph

Oh!! and I loved coopermans answer.....

My mini has started doing that too and only above 45-50 however sometimes its silent. I think my whining is from the o/s/f and when I have some spare cash I'm gonna go for the wheel bearing. My reasons for thinking its the wheel bearing is like the OP has said the noise is still there when the clutch is depressed.
