Hi all,

Bit of a strange one but thought that Id throw it out there.

Does anyone know of any plant that the Silver Dollar fish will not eat (or at least not feast upon)? I am quite learned in the whole hobby but am having trouble with this one particular point.

Thanks

Craig

Java moss and Java fern works pretty well from experience. Grows like anything, so as they snack on it you dont really notice. Amazon swords can sometimes be fine, depending on the mentality of the fish.

Anubias sp. is fine, I've never had a problem with that. Even with goldies :D

Floating plants are probably your best bet though... you obviously don't want plastic (looks crap and provides nothing to the mini eco-system that is a cycled aquarium). Like I say it depends on the mentality of the fish, I've had Siamese fighters that will live happily will an amazon sword swamped aquarium for months, and others that decide its yummy and a well planted tank can be deserted it a week or so.

Ps, nice name. :)

Thanks for that, amazon swords are eaten with relish unfortunately..... they just seem to have gone crazy as of late and just eat everything. And you're rihght - no plastic please *blurgh*. Will try some of the java moss balls.

That's not good then. I'm sure you know from experience that it really does depend on the way the fish are. I've had groups that are fine from one place, and then some that are crazy from another.

'Marimo' wont last long if they're getting through amazing swords. They'll just tear them apart in a few hours.

Plastic ones usually do the trick, :proud: :dontgetit:

Sorry, had to, >_<

Quick Google seems to show that they'll eat pretty much anything, even java moss.

here ya go This is one i use, the Java Fern - Click here

and i think this is the other type ive got??? click here

But there is loads to pick from. Not sure about buying from a online shop tho, i alway buy from what i can see when it comes to this sort of stuff. if you can spend abit more and get it already on Bog wood you wont have a problem. It takes years tho for a tank to be in a place to grown plants well in its gravel/sand/stones

Thank you. That’s my old setup in a Aqua one Bow front tank, nothing great just a normal set up but with a external filter system. Now running a smaller Juwel 180 corner tank with a 1000L power head :errr: (abit too big but gets things moving! lol) a aqua pro external filter which also goes through a Large Vecton UV unit, and mainly for later in life, I’ve fitted inside my current tank a Protein shimmer which i know is no good for cold water but does put oxygen into the water and also does remove some waste from its top. So the setup I’ve got is now ready for when and if i want to go onto marine

My dollar (only one left out of 4 that were put in 5 years ago  ) doesn't get the chance to eat any plants, due to the facts its tankmates, 2 9 inch Oscars will "play" with anything I put into their tank and rip it to shreds, however I still throw in some lettuce every so often which all three have a great time with.
