I have a 1963 Morris mini and i am involved in our local car club - so far i have been competing in sprints and hill climbs

However the club also runs off road sprints on grass or gravel, i want to have a go but rally tyres are not cheap and i dont know if i should use 10" tyres or 12" tyres.

I have a spare set of old 10" steel cooper rims and a set of rover cooper 12" minilights i just don't know which ones to spend my money on.

So my question is this.

Whats best (performance wise - I want to be competitive) 10" or 12" for rally sprints?

any advice would be welcome

Kevin

What brakes are you running?

Ideally I think I'd run on the 10's, only exception being if you wanted a bit more braking power and were running 8.4" discs with either standard or Metro calipers.

Also, Minispares sell a wide range of tyres, they may have just what you're after, and if you join TMF+ for £5, you get a 7.5% discount, (not bad when buying four tyres).

On a 1963 drum-braked car the Rover 12" Minilites might not fit as the offset on the 12" wheels will be for front discs and rear drums with the built-in spacers. however, for competition you will probably wqnt 'S' discs, e3specially if competing in the Historic class where 7.5" 'S' discs are classed as 'period modifications'on an 850 and are, therefore, allowable. Then you'll need 10" 'S' wheels to be compliant with Historic regs. and 10" tyres to suit the events youa re entering will be needed. The 10" Falken is an excellent compromise for general club motorsport and I've had good results with them on my 1964 car. When you say you have 10" Cooper rims, do you actually mean Cooper 'S' steel rims as the 10" Cooper rims are identical to 850 rims - 3.5" with offset for drum brakes. You can tell the 10" 'S' rims as they have holes around the rims to allow better brake cooling and need disc brakes in order to fit correctly.
I hope this helps. Good luck with your rallying - keep it on the road!

I used a set of http://www.minisport..._70R10HAKR.html

on the Rally of the Tests last November, they worked well in the all the mud and Irish bogs that we visited. :)

Thanks chaps, i think i have chucked a spanner in the works by not giving you my full specs.

I have 7.5 discs so have enough braking at the moment and i guess this opens up my wheel options.

Those Hakr tyres look good, the 12" are much cheaper then the 10"

i like the idea of the discount, this sounds good.

so not worring about fitment

what is going to make me faster 10" or 12"

First of all, if you are competing in the Historic category, and a 1963 Mini will not be competitive on rallies in any other category, then you will be restricted to 10" as the diameter must not be any more than 1" greater than standard for the period. Also, for Historic rallies the tyres must be not less than 70% aspect ratio, which means that 12" won't fit anyway, since a 165/60x12 is not allowed and anything with a greater aspect ratio won't fit (a 155/70x12 may just fit but they are not good on a rally Mini).
Now, with 10" it does depend on the surfaces you'll be rallying on. For gravel/loose you need the Hakka, but for normal tarmac, which may be wet, slightly broken or with a bit of earth or mud, then the Falkens are probably the best compromise. For ultra-smooth tarmac then a Yoko is the very best.
I once did a 75% tarmac rally in Wales and used Yokos. I rolled it on a gravel section over the edge and 14 ft down a gulley. The next year I won the event using a Colway Knobbly tyre, even though it lacked grip on the tarmac. It's all a compromise on rallies.
I do hope this helps.

My local club have no restriction on tyre size, however, you make a good point, if i want to participate in other events i will have to think about wheel / tyre restrictions. :)
