Ipod Thru A Graphic Equaliser

can anyone advise me if i wire up a graphic equaliser to my speakers, can i simply plug in an ipod and get good quality sound without the useing a head unit?

Sure you're using the right terms? A graphic equalizer by itself does nothing to boost the output level of the Ipod, and the Ipod by itself is only designed to run low impedance headphones. Perhaps you're talking about one of the old equalizer/boosters, which had a weak amplifier in with the system.
You're much better off with a modern amp with speaker level inputs and lots of wattage headroom, or even a line driver to boost the signal out of the ipod into an amp so you can achieve an acceptable output level.

It's far simpler to get a headunit that can accept a USB or external headphone jack input, and power the speakers from that. If you want, many headunits can be mounted in a hidden location and operated with a wireless remote control, so if a headunit attracting thieving scum is your concern, that may be an option...

i currently have my ipod connected into my amp in the car and works great. only downfall means i cant easily tweak bass treble levels from a head unit it all has to be done via the amp. but i have got a decent balance when i set them up initially.
