The problem is not just the physical connectors but the electrical connections & control protocols (It's the same principle as Blaupunkt gives commands in German and the Sony is waiting for them in Japanese!)
Secondly, when you run your signal cables back to the boot, put them on the opposite side of the car, if you run them alongside the car's loom you can pick up all sorts of engine noises...mainly the dreaded engine whine.
From the head-unit you'll just need the signal cables (paired RCA) and a remote wire (to turn amp on/off). Luckily for Mini owners, the +12v & Ground are already in the boot area.

the cable needs to be suitably rated for the amp. Also, for safety reasons put a fuse inline (less then 18inchs from battery end) as close to the battery as possible.

i don't know where this ' 18" rule ' came from, i've heard it a number of times (i'm sure it's confused with amplifier ground cables). If you thread a power cable through a metal panel immediately next to a battery, would it make sense to put a fuse on the other side of the panel?
My rule is, i try and keep the cable from +12 battery terminal to fuse holder, 'too short to touch the negative of the battery' & 'too short to touch exposed chassis or grounded metalwork'
You want to make sure that if the cable falls out of the fuse holder, it's not going to create a short circuit & burn your car out.
