hi took the engine out of my mini as part of my refurb, and have used petrol to strip a layer of black paint and grease, it has come off a treat but will it leave a residue that may cause the new paint to react? do i need to use anything before primering it? any advice? should i use anything else when doing the underbody instead of petrol

You could try brake cleaner but i would use a spirit wipe than can be bought from car factors or a proper automotive paint supplier.

I would get it as clean as you can with something like white spirit or brake cleaner, before rinsing thoroughly with some clean water and allow to dry. Then as above i'd get some panel wipe (auto paint supplier, ebay etc) and wipe that around the engine bay before you paint.

White spirit isn't really that different from petrol - Sugar Soap is the best thing to clean off the
petrol with. You can get it in a spray from B&Q. Then just clean water to clean off the sugar soap.
Panel wipe then new paint.
