I am carrying out an extensive restoration of an 82 mini HL and have just re-installed the pedals and master cylinders. The height of the pedals is significantly different - the brake pedal is around 1.5 inches higher than the clutch!

I have used the original pedals but have replaced both master cylinders - a new yellow band brake cylinder and a tin clutch cylinder I picked up at a show. Both appear to be correctly installed and work smoothly but obviously there is a problem somewhere. I suspect that the brake is too high (difficult to tell without seats etc) as the pedal does not travel com pletely to the floor.

I guess that one or other of the cylinders or push rods are incorrect. Could someone tell me the correct pedal height from the floor so that I can narrow down the fault? I would also welcome suggestions on the cause and solution.

A photo might be useful. I had a similar issue, but the brake pedal was correct in relation to the throttle. After much umming and arrring, I cut-and-shut the clutch pedal to get it in the correct position.

Plus I didn't really want to cut and shut the brake pedal.

Could someone measure the height of their pedals from the floor and let me know what is the correct height?

My mini is an 82 as well and also has the same problem. I have a spare pedal to try sometime, but also think there may be two different pedals, mine still has the black band cylinder fitted.

I would like to get mine sorted too.

I think the brake pedal is normally higher than the clutch anyway

Some brake pedals are different, this is actually a good thing as you get more pedal travel before you hit the floor!!!
I read it somewhere but I forget the exact details - check the thickness of the brake pedal metal also - not the pedal pad itself, but the shaft, if you get what I mean
If it is thicker than the clutch, it is probably one of these extra cranked pedals (for discs, esp coooper s although might be normal on all discs, I dont recall the exact details)
I have one on my 82 city e but I now have cooper s discs and read that these were a good idea - it works fine.

Thnks for comments so far.
The pedals and brakes are completely original (drums). The master cylinders have been replaced. These should be compatible but clearly either the clutch or brake cylinder (or one of the push rods) is not right.

I need to know the correct pedal height so that I can work out where the fault is. Can someone take a tape measure to their mini?

I have to say I believe the only fault is that you didn't look carefully enough at the car before you stripped it down, the brake pedal is meant to be considerably higher than the clutch pedal.

As Dan says, it's how they are meant to be. It's the hexagonal pedals that were introduced with dual circuit brakes - not much point in having dual circuits if the leaky one lets the pedal hit the floor anyway.

There's no difference between discs & drums, altering the length of the pushrod is the best solution, but it's obviously safer to extend the clutch's.

Only problem I noticed with the higher brake pedal was it was harder to do heel and toe braking, but apart from that it just takes a bit of getting used to.

Could someone please measure the height of their brake and clutch pedals from the floor to help me identify the problem?

ive got the same problem
put a new clutch plate and clutch slave cylinder along with the brake and clutch resevoirs and found that the clutch pedal sits lower than the brake by a good amount
im just going to live with it as i couldnt be bothered with the hassle of taking the pedal box etc back out
