Model: Carb Cooper
Year: 1991
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible): When I accelerate (hard-ish) the rev counter used to twitch a little, with no noticable effect on the engine; gradually getting worse and now it twitches between 500 - 2000 rpm under hard acceleration, and the engine "skips a beat".
Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem? All standard on the ignition setup - As far as I am aware my car come standard with electronic ignition?
Hi All,
I'd had almost a whole month of driving the mini with no issues, so suppose its about time something went wrong!
So now the car is misbehaving. When driving along, accelerating slow there is no problem or anything, and also on idle it is fine.
Could this be a simple case of the dizzy, rotor arm or coil needing replacing? or maybe all 3 just to play it safe?
Or is there an underlying problem?
Cheers

Hi,
I've had these symptoms twice before. The first time I traced it to a corroded and broken wire within the plastic insulation of the lead coming from the electronic distributer module. I replaced the module with a new one. The second time the wire coming from the electronic points/ignition module in the distributer had been rubbing inside the distributer against the rotor arm.. It got worse over time and the rev counter got more erratic under acceleration and the engine missed until the wire finally broke, resulting in a breakdown and the a call to the AA.

mine used to do that , and it turns out the cable was loose to the condenser

I also had a similar problem recently...traced it to oil inside the dizzy cap, it had crept up from a worn gasket. A quick clean down and all was well

I have taken the dizzy cap off and gave it a clean (to be honest i have no idea if it was in ok condition because i've never seen a new or a worn one lol), Underneath my rotor arm I just had a metal plate - could see no cables or anything. But how can you tell if you have points or and electronic ignition?
Also where / what is the condensor? (that where the vacume hose connects?)
May have to disconnect the electronics and give a good squirt of WD40 over the lot!
Much prefer to take things apart and play, but the ignition system is one thing ive not manages to get me head around!
