This is a US court case, not a UK one and as a result I expect many people to be unfamiliar with it. I only became aware of it during a recent visit to America, where it was on the news on a regular basis.

Casey Anthony is accused of murdering her daughter, Caylee, which she obviously denies. I believe this is the American equivalent to the Maddie case, with the amount of coverage it is receiving across the pond, albeit different circumstances. Having followed little bits of the case on TV and recently having read the report on the CNN (this does not provide an in-depth knowledge by any means but does give an over view), I would say something is clearly wrong.

The defence seems to be inconsistent, sometimes claiming one thing and then trying to explain something with another reason that doesn't really link in. It seems to me that they are grasping at straws and a series of somewhat unlikely possibilities, even claiming the Casey's father, Caylee's grand-father, helped Casey to cover up an accidental death in the family out-door pool. While I accept that accidents do happen, and people get scared and do silly things, I find it very hard to believe that the grand-father would then put duct tape over the mouth of Caylee before burying her in the woods.

The prosecution, on the other hand seems a lot more consistent and based around a general theory that the mother, who was 22 at the time, did not want the burden of a child and the responsibility that came with it. There are a number of things that do not add up, especially the child being 'missing' for a month before she reported. During this time, Casey is reported to have been out partying and shopping as normal, telling friends Caylee was with a nanny, who does not exist. A woman by the same name does exist in America, but she claims never to have met the Anthony family in her life.

There are also several other pieces of evidence, of a much more scientific nature, that strongly indicate that Casey is in fact guilty of murdering her daughter. From what I remember from the news reports and trial coverage that I saw, there was also a sample of the air taken around where the body was discovered and analysed. I can't remember the full details, but believe it to be the first time such a test has been used in a court case.

For those of you who are familiar with the case, what do you think? Also, I am sure there are many court cases overseas that we never get to hear about that may be interesting for various reasons. Does anyone know of any?

Ah, but what about all that circumstantial evidence stacking up against Fiz and she's innocent.

duct tape...because i'm a lovely chap i do five days a week as a volunteer counsellor working with adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, some of the things i hear that family members have done to their children can be quite disturbing to say the least. so something like that wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

as for court cases overseas there are hundreds in this country that most people don't hear about. it's only when a child dies or in the case of madeline mccann where they hit the national press.

and don't get me started on the subject madeline's parents!!

That is a surprise, I really wasn't expecting that - I'm going to read into this a bit more now. I'm certainly not a legal expert, or scientist, or anything like that, and I guess only Casey really knows if she did it, but I did have down as guilty.

ANON, I accept your comment regarding some of the sick things people do, and admit it is a possibility, but I do think if someone was covering up an accident, duct tape over a dead girl's mouth would not be the first thing I thought of that's for sure.

Please do tell about your view's on Maddie's parents...I personally believe, aside from the whole 'leaving her by herself' rubbish that they are quilty of something. Whether that's murder, which unless the parent's hated her, is probably unlikely, or more likely covering up an accident. There is no way they can be completely innocent in all of this.

It will be interesting to see if Ms Anthony does in fact write a book about all this now. It obviously means the investigation must continue, either into the cause of death, i.e. accident or murder, and subsequently for the murderer.

oh go on then :) will try to keep it brief.

firstly why is it that when they came back to the uk social services weren't there waiting to take the other kids off them? after all they had left them on their own and one of them 'vanished'. have heard of so many cases where social services have taken peoples kids off them when they have left them home alone and the children involved have not come to any harm.

i'm not really one for conspiracy theories but have read some interesting stuff linking her dad to people involved in the hollie grieg case in scotland. that's another interesting case in itself yet one that hardly anyone has heard about.

I would have questioned why they buried the body, bloody helll just burn it, turns to ash then just chuck it in the sea,

For maddie case, for 1 they are both doctors and they dosed the kids up to sleep, so they could go out, so may have given maddie to much...., nobody is really questioning it as they have the media on there side, Now media is powerful and if you have them on your side nobody is going to say any different..its only recently its been all over the paper again so keeps them in the clear....

If anything its getting bloody boring this maddie crap..

Guilty guilty guilty. What a joke.

Poor little girl, rip cayley

What we know as fact: Little girl died, got put in boot of car then buried 5 miles away from home.

defence: Accidental death from pool drowning

whats odd: Duct tape, paint cans? partying to try & make first defence (nanny) seem true?

I dont care but lies have been told to prevent the truth coming out & that means somebody must be guilty of something

The US system is a lot different to ours when it comes to murder. They have all that 1st & 2nd degree stuff and tougher sentences, including the ultimate one in some states - that will really focus the jury's minds on the "beyond reasonable doubt" bit. In these days of DNA evidence taping the mouth of a corps doesn't sound so outlandish, but admittedly it would take some composure & forethought.

The prosecution were pushing for the death penalty for Casey on this one. I can't believe she isn't guilty. Granted, I'm not a scientist and I guess no one can know for real, but although the evidence is mostly circumstantial, it all points to wards Casey being guilty.

As for Maddie, I didn't realise her father was linked to another case. I might look into it. Unfortunately things like this will always happen and people will get away with it.

he's not actually linked to the holly grieg case directly, it's more on the lines of 'six degrees of separation'

think i found some stuff through links on the chris website...CLICKY CLICK

as i said i take conspiracy theories with a pinch of salt though :)

Casey case probably wouldn't of even got to court in Scotland, they have tough rules on evidence, everything must be corroborated by something else.
